How did this all begin?

Well, when my husband and I bought our first home, I quickly found myself wanting to fill the walls with art that brought me joy. I loved the idea of having one-of-a-kind, original pieces, but curating a collection of artwork immediately was not feasible. It will take time and I look forward to adding pieces over the years to complete this vision.

In the meantime, I decided what better way than to start decorating with my own art?! So, I pulled out my paint and brushes and started experimenting. I wanted to tie in different aspects of my background and expertise to the art itself, which is what led me to finishing off the pieces on the sewing machine. I have come to utilize the stitches much as a painter uses their brushes, creating depth and movement with the thread.

About me

Hi there! I'm Whitney, a passionate creator of sewn abstract art, residing in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. My artistic journey has been a colorful one, filled with inspirations drawn from nature and my experiences.

I've always had an affinity for art and design, which led me to pursue a career in fashion. With a focus on bridal, I honed my skills in fashion design while studying at the Savannah College of Art and Design. After graduating, I set off on an exciting adventure that took me to the bustling streets of New York City, where I worked as a wedding gown designer. It was during my time in the bridal sector that the art of sewing truly became ingrained in my creative process.

My life has been filled with exciting chapters, and one of the most beautiful ones began in high school when I met my wonderful husband. We embarked on our journey together at the tender age of 16, and our love has continued to grow ever since. We now reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, along with our two daughters. However, my roots trace back to South Carolina, where I was born, and Georgia, where I was raised. The experiences and connections from these places have shaped me as both an artist and an individual.

Over the past 15 years, our family has had the opportunity to explore various corners of the country. From Charlotte to Savannah, from Philadelphia to our current home in the San Francisco Bay Area, each move has enriched my perspective on life and art. Living in California, surrounded by breathtaking mountain ranges, rolling morning fog, and serene sunset beaches, nature has become an integral part of my creative process. The environment and the importance of sustainability hold a special place in my heart, influencing my artwork and the way I approach life as a whole.

What sets my art apart is the blend of my non-traditional background and the array of materials I utilize. While I didn't follow the conventional path of studying to be a painter, I bring a unique perspective to my creations. Beginning with acrylic and watercolor paints on unstretched canvas, I weave in hand-painted and handmade papers, along with delicate touches of gold and silver leaf. Every artwork is then finished with my distinctive signature touch—sewing machine stitches that infuse depth, texture, and a sense of fluidity into each piece.

Through my sewn abstract art, I strive to create a visual experience that engages and captivates viewers. Each brushstroke, paper selection, and stitch is thoughtfully woven together to evoke emotions and transport you to a tranquil state of mind. I invite you to explore my art and join me on this artistic journey inspired by nature, sustainability, and the beauty that surrounds us.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit about me and my passions that guide my work.
